Many famous seafarers, including Drake, set sail from here and in 1808 The Redoubt circular fort was constructed due to the threat of invasion by Napoleons’ troops. The Pilgrim Fathers built their ship The Mayflower and set sail on their epic journey from the port. Currently, work is underway on the construction of a replica Mayflower. The plan is to sail the ship to America to celebrate the 400th anniversary in 2020 of the landing of the Pilgrim Fathers.
